BLAK Clay: How We Formulated Our Best Seller

When we decided to create a product line, we had one rule: nothing ships unless our barbers choose it over what they are already using.

BLAK Clay took forty-seven formulations to get right. The brief was simple — matte finish, strong hold, workable all day, washes out in one shampoo. Simple brief, brutal execution.

Formulations one through twenty were too waxy. They held well but left residue. Twenty-one through thirty-five solved the residue problem but sacrificed hold. Thirty-six onwards, we found the balance — a kaolin clay base with beeswax for structure and castor oil for workability.

The final formula (number forty-seven) passed the ultimate test: every Sonder barber switched to it voluntarily. No mandate, no obligation. They just preferred it.

That is the BLAK standard. If the people who use product professionally every day choose it freely, it is ready.
